On Monday, May 13th, 2024, the Daviess County CEO Cohort had the pleasure of learning about and playing a round of golf at Putter’s Bay in Washington on their last Business visit of the year.. They were warmly welcomed by the owners, Virginia and Steve Dayton. Virginia shared the inspiring story of how Steve envisioned and started the business back in 2005.
Finding the right location was a significant challenge, as their first attempt to build the course in a park was declined. However, through perseverance and support from other business owners, they secured their current location. Virginia emphasized that "location, location, location" is crucial, especially for a novelty and entertainment business, and highlighted the importance of adaptability with the advice, "Expect the Unexpected!"
Virginia offered the cohort valuable insights, advising them to start with available resources, seek advice from others, and not hesitate to ask for help. She also shared that owning a business sometimes involves making tough decisions, like letting employees go, but noted, "they are truly firing themselves." She encouraged the group to avoid limiting themselves, be flexible in their roles, and strive to accommodate customers, remembering that "everyone has a STORY."
The cohort thanked Virginia and Steve for their hospitality, noting the beauty of the course and the enriching experience. OP
