On March 7th, the Daviess County CEO Cohort had the privilege of visiting with Dr. Merle and Mary Jo Holsopple. Dr. Holsopple shared his career journey, emphasizing that success doesn’t always follow a straight path and that it’s never too late to return to college.
The couple provided valuable insights on life and business ethics, covering topics such as:
**Confidentiality – The importance of trust and discretion in business.
**Work and family balance – Prioritizing personal well-being alongside professional responsibilities.
**Memories over money – A reminder that financial success fades, but experiences and relationships last.
**Self-care – Dr. Holsopple advised, “Learn to take care of your own self,” stressing that personal well-being is crucial for long-term success.
**Exit strategy – When starting a business, always plan ahead for a smooth transition or succession.
**Employee retention – Mary Jo shared her HR perspective, saying she always asks, “What will keep you in a job?” She encouraged fostering a supportive workplace culture.
**Values and faith – Both speakers emphasized the importance of staying true to one’s principles in both life and business.
Having recently sold their practice to Daviess Community Hospital, the couple reflected on their transition, noting, “Here we are approaching the end of our careers, but talking to students just starting theirs.”
A heartfelt thank you to Mary Jo and Dr. Holsopple for sharing their time, wisdom, and experiences with us today!
