On April 24th, the students of the Daviess County CEO class were treated to an enlightening session during their recent visit to Zax's Creamery, where they had the pleasure of conversing with the owner, Zach Graber. Zach generously shared insights into his entrepreneurial journey, peppered with valuable lessons and personal anecdotes.
Zach commenced the session by offering a glimpse into his background, revealing that he graduated from Barr-Reeve High School before pursuing further education at Vincennes University. He emphasized the pivotal role played by influential figures in his life, recounting how a chance encounter during a side job in his youth led to the inception of his business venture. Stressing the importance of networking, Zach urged the students to cultivate meaningful connections, citing them as instrumental in one's professional growth.
The narrative seamlessly transitioned to the evolution of Zax's Creamery, which took root in September 2018 with humble beginnings—a trailer serving as its maiden outlet. Through steadfast dedication and strategic expansion, the business flourished, culminating in the establishment of a second location in Jasper. Zach recounted the transformative phase of rebranding undertaken between 2020 and 2021, wherein the focus shifted towards crafting homemade ice cream—a decision fraught with both challenges and triumphs.
In a mentorship-like fashion, Zach imparted invaluable business wisdom to the eager minds before him. He underscored the significance of customer-minded practices, urging entrepreneurs to adapt to evolving consumer needs while recognizing the precious commodity of time in the entrepreneurial realm. Zax's Creamery's spirit is the cultivation of genuine relationships with patrons, coupled with a nostalgic atmosphere aimed at fostering repeat visits—a sentiment echoed in the recent accolade of being featured at French Lick Resort.
The session concluded with Zach distilling key principles for success, encapsulating the essence of good work ethic, great service, product quality, efficiency, opportunistic outlook, and the importance of letting go of grudges—a comprehensive blueprint for aspiring entrepreneurs.
The Daviess County CEO class extended their gratitude to Zach Graber for his generosity in sharing his time and wisdom, leaving with newfound inspiration and a deeper understanding of the entrepreneurial journey.
